How to Grow the Best Green SuperFood that has more Protein than Beef Indoors

through another exciting episode and for this episode I’m not even actually outside in
my garden, I’m actually gonna start growing inside my house and to do that I’ve got
a headed in fish tank and no, I’m not gonna be growing some fish, right, well you can’t
grow fish inside your own fish tank and fish em or eat em or whatever you want to do. it’s
not a very sustainable way to grow food in my opinion, because the fish they grow very
slowly and they definitely don’t have a lot of meat on them and in addition people
may think fish are like, good for ‘em in my opinion they are really not the best things
for you guys to eat, many people might think they are high in protein. Well what I’m
gonna grow in this fish tank is actually what the fish eats. So I’ve always encouraged
you guys to eat lower on the food chain and, you know, eat the, eat plants, eat fruits
and vegetables out of your garden if you have a garden outside, you know, that would feed
the larger animals that normally people would eat, so, generally people that are needing
meat are giving the fruits and vegetables second hand and in most cases unfortunately,
it’s actually greens in the form of GMO corn soy you know, which are raised for the
animals that people are eating the most. And likewise, you know, I recommend eating fruits
and vegetables instead of the animals and, you know, instead of eating fish I recommend
eating what the fish eats right? What do they eat? They eat algae. So that’s what I’m
gonna be growing in my fish tank. the algae that I got shipped to me in this is box is
super easy to grow anybody that has a home inside; or you could even grow them outside
but I like to control the environment a little more on the inside. You can grow your own
algae and the cool thing is unlike the little fishies that you’re growing in here that
grow slow, the algae grows super fast and the type of algae I’ll be growing is spirulina.
and the spirulina algae can double, you know, in just 24 to 48 hours, so it doubles in mass
in just a day or two, so this is a very sustainable food source whether you’re into prepping
for disaster in the future or whether you just want to be able to grow some of your
own food and you don’t have a place outside to do it. Everybody can get a ten gallon fish
tank like I did at their local pet store, this thing was like, on sale for like, ten
bucks, you know, and get this kid here and, you know, that’s what I’m gonna be doing
in this episode today. Now in addition, the spirulina that I’m growing is actually very
high in phytochemicals and phytonutrients, also vitamins and minerals, you know, it said
that people that are in the Olympics use spirulina; gives them extra energy so that they could
win, all this stuff. Also there is a lot of research with the health benefits of spirulina
and how it could be helpful, you know, when you’re trying to manage or heal different
diseases in the body. You know, I’ve been taking spirulina for years in its powdered
dry form, but much like I grow some of that powdered dry forms of the vegetables that
they sell at health food stores; I can now grow my own spirulina, it’s very simple,
very easy, and there’s minimal chances of getting it contaminated with bad algaes or
whatnot due to the way that you’re growing it indoors and especially if you’re growing
it indoors, you know, there’s not gonna be some random things that are going to get
in there and mess you up. So this is my number one way you guys, yes you guys that have apartments,
condos and that are not yet growing outside but followed me. You guys wanna grow your
own spirulina. Spirulina itself is a super food and believe it or not, it’s the number
one protein source per calorie in the world. The algaes have more protein than even the
best beef, chicken, fish, eggs, and in addition you won’t get the negative side effects,
you know, that you do get with eating meat; like raising your IGF1 which, you know, can
increase your cancer incidences, as well as get things like colon cancer and other things.
So you know, eat plants for the win and to me, spirulina is just another plant.
So I guess without further ado lets go ahead and get into this episode. I’ve got a shipping
from spirulina systems in Palmdale, California. I already mailed and we got their complete
system, the only thing aside from what’s in this box here I got the X system you’ll
need is a fish tank and if it’s cold where you live you’re gonna need a fish tank heater,
right, but other than that you don’t need anything it’s nice and warm here in Las
Vegas so I don’t need anything at this point maybe come wintertime I might invest in a
heater but yeah I don’t need anything for that. So let me go ahead and show you guys
what’s in this set up here. Super simple super easy, I mean some of this stuff you
can maybe put together yourself, but I just recommend getting a complete proven and tested
kit. Alright, number one we have the air-lift pump. So this is the air lift pump here, set
up, ready to go. Next, we have a digital thermometer and some PH test strips. This is very important;
we need to monitor the temperature in the tank. The spirulina doesn’t like it, you
know, like a 105 or a 103; they lose their life their gone poof! You know, so I wouldn’t
want to put them outside in the summertime, you know, if it’s too cold they’re barely
still alive like you know if you like go inside to Cosco and you go on the freezer or the
fridge area where you’re picking up your produce you just kind of move a little bit
slower and those of you guys living in Canada in the winter you might move slower on the
winter time and that’s what happens with the spirulina right. When it’s too cold
the spirulina is just staying alive but they’re not thriving and they’re not multiplying
right, so the utmost temperature you wanna keep the spirulina is maybe between like high
80s low 90s and be up to like 93 to 95 and that’s where they’re really gonna be like
“oh my God we’re so happy the weather is nice and we’re gonna multiply like crazy”
so yeah, very important to check the temperature. The other thing is the PH test strips. This
is also a very important content of this system because you wanna make sure the water in your
tank where you’re growing you spirulina is the proper PH and the proper PH for this
spirulina is about 10 and this is a very alkaline solution where literally other things won’t
grow. Okay, next we’ve just got a standard air pump this is a Tetra whisper air pump
up to 10 gallon aquariums and this is standard air pump hopefully it’s pretty quite. And
the next thing we got is; we got a mineral booster here so I don’t exactly know if
this is called a mineral booster and its different kinds of minerals in there and this is a food
for the spirulina. In addition we have some iron chelate right here in this little dropper,
it’s just gonna basically take two nice squeezes of the iron chelate to basically
get the spirulina growing. Now I have seen people basically just get some standard iron
nails and put them in the water and let them rust and pour some of that rust water in.
I don’t know if I wanna be eating rust water indirectly or some of the contaminates that
can happen on there like tetanus so I’m just gonna get the iron here, the chelated
iron. In addition we got a post harvest food for the spirulina and we also have some starter
packets of food for the spirulina basically which is the nutrients and if you go down
to the health food store and you buy organic spirulina, you know, this is basically the
nutrients that they’re feeding the organic spirulina, you know, that you would buy. Now
I have purchased organic spirulina in the past and have eaten it a lot and yeah, I believe
anyway you can get your super foods in you, whether it’s dry or fresh is good. But I
like to say freshest is always bestest so I’m really glad I’m gonna have alive spirulina
that I’m gonna be able to harvest and put in smoothies, add to sauces, put in different
recipes, add to soups and check this is out: even I could take my own spirulina and then
dry it to make spirulina sheets. And let me tell you, my girlfriend, she loves dried spirulina
so I’m looking forward to get some of the fresh spirulina that I’m mixing with other
ingredients and herbs and spices and make my own amazing spirulina crackers.
See I got a couple more packets of the starter nutrients here and then the last thing you’ll
need that’s very important which are sealed in these plastic bottles -Josh would not be
happy – and they are sealed the plastic bottles, plus they actually seal them in additional
bags so this is shipped very well and these bottles actually contain alive spirulina cultures
and so don’t drink ‘em they’re too 9:10 to drink what you’re gonna do is put ‘em
in a tank with some water, with some nutrients and they basically multiply and then you’re
gonna eat them. So this process takes about maybe about a month or so, you know, depending
on your temperature and climatic conditions but in about a month you can be harvesting
spirulina every other day from this 10 gallon kit. Now, if you want to get a 20 gallon kit
you can be harvesting like, every single day. So that’s simply amazing you can grow the
highest protein food source with all the amino acids in there as well as a lot of different
phytochemicals and phytonutirents, what is it, phytozine and all these other cool things
that are healthy for you in your house. I mean, I think I might even like spirulina
even a little bit more than my vegetables and in my opinion, you know, as good as micro
greens are, you could grow those inside, I think spirulina is actually a lot more nutritious
than even the micro greens so that’s definitely saying a lot. So yeah that’s all we’ve
got in here I mean this is super simple super easy to set up. I guess without further ado
I’m gonna go ahead and get setting up for you guys. So the first thing I wanna do is
I wanna set up this temperature thing here, thermometer, that’s very important. So you
just got a digital thermometer here for aquariums and the cool thing is it actually already
got a battery installed and actually they’re nice enough to give you spare battery for
when it goes out because it is very important to monitor the temperature of your tank. So
basically we’re just gonna go ahead and stick this probe in there, and I’ll probably
just stick it like on the bottom of the tank to get a pretty good reading there and then
we’re just gonna like have it come all the way on top and we’re gonna basically stick
this guy on, let’s peel this thing off, alright we’re gonna stick this guy right
on the front there so I can always monitor the temperature of my tank. So that was super
simple, super easy. This is an easy kit to set up here. Of course we got some PH test
trips, we’re gonna need those in a little bit. The next thing is, we’re gonna go ahead
and set up the lift pumps. So this part is actually fairly easy to set up. Basically
you’re just gonna take these little holder things and pop them in the suction cup and
then you’re gonna go ahead and take these holder things and put it around the tube,
one on either end. Once you have this all ready next we’re gonna go ahead and take
the air tube and find a little hole on the bottom, and we’re just gonna stick the air
through that little hole and I’m gonna just basically guide it up a little bit and this
is basically just a lift pump, the air is gonna get pumped through here, the air bubbles
is gonna lift water the same time it’s lifting the air up to the top so this will operate
and keep the water flowing inside your tank and we’re then gonna go ahead and stick
it up at a little angle once again not straight so the water, the air, could you know, flow
up and out and circulate the water. Have this coming off this side here. Next we’re gonna
go ahead and take our Tetra whisper air pump, this is like a little pump that I had when
I was a kid when I had goldfish in a ten gallon tank. I wonder where that tank is now that’s,
and hopefully this air pump is a lot quieter than the one I had when I was a kid. Simple,
we’re just gonna go ahead and plug this guy in, plug the air tube in, and then we
can go ahead and plug this guy in the wall. I mean, super simple, super easy, even a child
can do it and if your child is doing it with you, you know, it’s just super awesome please.
And I can’t wait until I have kids and I’m gonna, they’re gonna be growing their own
spirulinas like science projects and starting a raised-bed garden it’ll be really cool.
Alright, so we’re gonna go ahead and plug this guy in. Wow! I plugged it in man! Can
you guys even hear the pump? I’ll shut for a minute maybe you can hear it. You can barely
hear that pump this is truly a whisper quiet pump! Pretty amazing. Alright so let’s go
ahead and unplug that pump now we’re getting through all the different components here,
the next thing we’re gonna need to do is add water. So I wanna stop there for a second
because, you know, the water you add can make or break your system, right, you could be
successful or not if you just go under the tap and fill up the tap water and put it in
here, you’re probably gonna fail. The chlorine in the tap water is not good for the spirulina.
It’s like oil and water, they don’t mix, neither does chlorine and spirulina. Or neither
does chlorine and the microbes in your garden soil for that matter right. So you wanna get
a good filtered water, you know, I would like to get some good like spring water out of
a mineral spring, you know, or minimally, you know, you can get some tap water and then
let it sit down and dissipate the chlorine if you have chlorine. Now if you have chloramine
that stuff doesn’t dissipate as easy, so you might wanna maybe get some kind of, you
know, spring water or filtered water, reversed osmosis or distilled water. So I guess that’s
what I’m gonna go ahead and do next, I have a reversed osmosis set up in my kitchen that
removes all the minerals and all, virtually all the contaminants in there. And then we’re
gonna fill that up with two and a half gallons of water and we’ll be back at you when we’re
done. So I have two gallons of water in the tank
now and this is reversed osmosis water. We’re gonna go ahead and add the last half gallon
in there and that will bring me up to two and a half gallons so the next thing you’ll
do is you’re gonna go ahead and plug in the pump and then set up this air lift tubes.
You can see how that works. As you guys could see it’s bubbling up so we got to basically
lower this guy down a bit. So you guys can see the water is coming out
the bottom. Alright, so we got this air lift pump going and we wanna basically get it all
the way down to the bottom. Maybe I’ll attach the bottom suction cup to the bottom instead
of the side, and then this guy will adjust appropriately. So you could see it’s kind
of bubbling up and we want it to kind of be at a more of an angle here, so you kind of
adjust it up a little bit. That’s too high you see it’s like moving really slow. We’re
gonna adjust it down to move pretty fast. I think right about there; looks like we got
a nice water flow and it’s bubbling and moving and circling the water there. It’s
pretty good maybe it’s still a little bit higher. So yeah now we got the air-lift pump
running the next thing to do is we need to add our ‘nuts’ or nutrients so the first
thing we’re gonna do is go ahead and add the starter mixture so they give you these
bags and it says instructions: add half bag of starter to two and a half gallons of water
or one bag to five gallons of water. Use only reversed osmoses or distilled water so you
know that’s what I’m using; I’m using the RO water so, perfect. So we’re gonna
go ahead and tear this thing open here. And now I’m gonna go ahead and carefully pour
out about half of this stuff in the tank. Alright, I think that’s about half. Next,
we need to stir it up. So I’ve got a little spatula thing here. Stir this up and get it
nice and mixed up. It’s like I’m playing in the bathtub when I was a kid, you know,
and making waves. It’s a tsunami, it’s gonna hit Hawai. Alright looks like that’s
pretty much mixed up. Next thing we need to do is we need to add the iron chelate here.
So this is super simple, super easy, we’re just gonna go ahead and suck it up and we’re
gonna go ahead and basically put two teaspoonfuls or two sucked up thingfuls, it goes up about
halfway then you’re just gonna squirt it in and then once again you’re gonna wanna
mix that up really good. ‘Ah my pretty, I’m stirring the witches’ broom’. Alright,
stirred up nice and easy. Now the next thing this, you know, additional thing that I’ve
got is the mineral booster. So you know, as you guys know my garden philosophy is I always
like to add extra minerals to the garden because, you know, whatever is in the soil is what
the plant will absorb and whatever is in the water is the nutrients that the spirulina
will absorb, so when you eat the spirulina you get those nutrients into you. So we’re
gonna go ahead and add the extra added mineral booster here. You wanna add the approved amount
of mineral booster it’s very important, you know, to get the ratios right you don’t
wanna get the water too much out of balance or they’ll be some issues. So the appropriate
amount to add is basically two ounces for every five gallons and because I’m only
starting out with two and half gallons, we’re gonna add only one ounce so with a nice measuring
glass here we’re gonna go ahead and measure out only one ounce. Alright so I got one ounce
of mineral boost, we’re just gonna go ahead and pour that in once again we’re gonna
go ahead and mix that up now this is where you would actually normally add the spirulina
culture but, I’m not really good at following directions and the good news is they didn’t
actually include any directions with this kit which actually I believe they should include
at least some minimal amount of directions with the kit. They basically direct you to
their online website where they actually have videos on how to set this up which is really
simple and easy to follow but I think a lot of people might appreciate some written directions
and at least the written directions have a link to the website with the videos as well.
So anyways I’m not gonna follow directions they didn’t give any so I’m actually able
to follow videos really good. Hopefully you guys are too. But nonetheless, I’m gonna
do something a little bit outside the box and I have not a huge idea if this is gonna
be good or not, you, know I suppose, just like your garden right, if you’re growing
in soil outside, you know, and you’re using organic nutrients you know, worm castings,
rock dust, and all the things that I recommend on my show, it’s pretty hard to burn your
plant. There’s like a nice range, you put too much of anything it’s gonna create inferable
conditions for your plant to grow. But I like to kind of stick in the range and you have
a really big leeway for air when growing in like an outside raise bed. If you wanna grow
outside be sure to check my other episodes because all of my other episodes virtually
are having to do with growing food outside in the soil. Of course I also have videos
of growing micro greens indoors I’ll put a link bellow for that. And I’ll actually
link for sprouts indoors, I’ll put a link of that below, which are the two best other
things you can grow inside besides the spirulina. But in any case, you know, just like that
we wanna create habitable conditions for the spirulina to grow I’m using RO or distilled
water and the measurements as explained by spirulina systems, you will be successful.
So you don’t have to figure anything out and this is, you know, one of the main reasons
why I think you guys should buy a premade kit, you know, that, they’ve done all the
math and you’re making sure you’re not mixing stuff up. But of course if you’re
DIY guy you could search online and figure out how to mix all this stuff up yourself
you might save a few bucks but, you know, you might not get good results and I don’t
wanna mess around, you know, when people have already figured out a perfect system that
works that’s what I’m just gonna follow cause I’ve got other things to do than just
play with my spirulina all day. Alright, so anyways the thing outside the box I’m gonna
do, I’m gonna go ahead and add the Pure Aussie Ocean Derives Sea Minerals. It’s
also sold under the brand name for growing as GroPal and this is basically sea minerals
with the sodium removed. So this, I don’t recommend you guys doing this. I’m doing
this because I wanna make sure I have mineral rich food you could spray this on your plants
outside because it doesn’t have the sodium you know, it’s more forgiving, you know,
than some of the ocean solid products out there for your outside gardening. That being
said, you know, growing in this, you know, I’m not gonna put that much I’m just gonna
put just a little cap like half of a cap full in there, you know, and it’s my belief that
some trace minerals are better than none. Now if I put too much of this, that will cause
the spirulina, you know, not to flourish and I believe by just adding a little bit it’s
gonna be alright because you know a lot of people growing spirulina with just standard
filtered tap water with the chlorine removed which has naturally recurring minerals and
you know by using the RO water and the nutrients they’re providing it may not provide all
the minerals that I would like to see. So I guess you guys will see future updates on
how this works for me. So I guess the next step is we’re just gonna go ahead and add
the spirulina cultures and they come in this bottles here that are sealed up. That’s
very important, if you order this kit you better be serious about doing this. You don’t
wanna order this kit and let this stuff sit around for anymore than a week at most and
then you’re not gonna get as good results as if you order your kit, you have your tank
ready, you have your heater ready and as soon as it comes you do this easy couple minutes
set up, you know, because the longer this stuff sits, these are alive, you know, creatures
inside here. The longer it sits the more they, you know, diminish. So yeah, I got this kit
yesterday. I’m able to do it today so that’s what I’m doing and I’m showing you guys.
So yeah then we’re just going to simply pour in the spirulina culture here. And as
you guys could see, it’s turning the water green. Green is the colour of the earth, all
the plants in the earth that photosynthesis and make nutrients for us. So yeah, you just
kind of slowly see the water start to change colour. Let’s go ahead and put this next
one in. You’re gonna empty all three of the bottles into the system. Now the cool
thing is, once you get your system up and running, and what’s gonna happen in about
a month actually from the time I pour these guys in, the water is filled with nutrients,
these guys are gonna be like ‘wow we’re happy thank you John from GrowingYourGreens
for growing our spirulina and making us happy’ they’re gonna multiply right? Just like
you got happy kids, they’re not kids they’re happy cults. And then they’re going to make
babies, so these guys double, you know, in 24 to 48 hours they’re gonna double in spirulina
growth and after about a month, after about a week it’s gonna turn noticeably darker
green and they have about a month that’s when you can actually start to harvest them.
And then in that point you’re also going to have more nutrients so once I harvest my
spirulina I’ll be making another video on that. Here’s the last of the three bottles
we’re adding. I think this has completely submerged my lift pump. So we’re probably
gonna lift that up a little bit more, to get a nice angle on it. Alright, so that’s all
the spirulina. I mean, and the final step is we’re just gonna go ahead and adjust
this lift pump a little bit. That’s a little bit slow. We want a nice; alright it’s moving
pretty good right there. There we go. Yes moving pretty nice right there so we’re
just gonna kinda leave it right there and you know, I do recommend you guys get a top
for your aquarium, you know, like a plastic glass, or glass or a solid top this will help
keep some of the heat inside. Number one I did hit the thermometer, I’ll go ahead and
hit it again here and check the temperature. Looks like the temperature inside is 75.4
at present time so this is good. I think I’m gonna go ahead and move this guy in the hottest
room of my house which is my bedroom actually, and just let it thrive in there, cause normally
my bedroom is about 80 degrees, normally. And these guys will multiply and I’ll get
to watch them. So yeah I’ll put a cover on it so it don’t get any contamination
in there also, it’ll also help keep everything a little bit warmer. Optionally we would want
the temperature up and around like, you know, I don’t know, 85, 90, 91, 92 or so. So if
you get a heater for an aquarium heater like you are setting it up in the winter time or
when it’s cold or you keep your house really cold. You will wanna get an aquarium heater
and I recommend you guys set that about 75. You see if the aquarium heater is too hot,
you know, the heater will actually get hotter than temperature you set if for right. So
you set your aquarium heater for like 75 it might get up to 85, right. And if you set
it for 85 it might get up to 95. So we don’t know the variance because every aquarium heater
is a little bit different. Set it at 75 to be safe and it’s better to be safe than
sorry because you could lose your cultures really fast if they get overheated and they
get burned. And the last thing is, we need to set this by a window, right, a sunny window,
You don’t want the heat if it’s super hot blaring on it but you do want it to get
some nice sunlight during the day so we’re gonna go ahead and put this near a window
where you get plenty of sun during the day and also get a little bit warmer and my goal
is to go out and get a cover tap plastics or get a custom cover for this to go on top
of my aquarium so that my spirulina can multiply in peace.
I mean this is how easy it is to grow spirulina at home. And sad to say, that it’s actually
even easier than growing micro greens, it’s easier than growing sprouts and its heck a
lot easier than growing your greens and growing your vegetables outside in the garden. I believe
everybody should be growing their own nutrient rich spirulina full of all the amino-acids,
higher in protein than aeroproducts plus it has the phytochemicals and phytonutrients
that they have a lot of research on that it shows that it’s beneficial against many
different diseases and of course, just to keep you healthy and to allow you to have
more endurance as an athlete. I mean, this is definitely one of my top super foods in

The final thing that I like to say is that my kit, the X system kit that I got shipped
to me was supposed to have an X harvesting system that would be included with the package
and when I unboxed it, it was actually not in there. So I learned that actually that
part of the kit was backwards so that will ship separately. Normally it ships with the
kit and when I do get that I’ll show you guys how easy it is to harvest your spirulina
otherwise you’ll use a standard fishnet which is kind of a pain so this system makes
it really easy and convenient so you can harvest your spirulina every other day in this ten
gallon setup. So the next thing I’d like to say is actually
growing your own spirulina is actually quit affordable once you got the system in place
and you’re up and going, it’s gonna cost as low as about a dollar to grow one pound
of fresh spirulina which is actually super cheap. I mean if you think of any kind of
leafy green in the store, it’s generally over a dollar a pound. Right when you get
the system, your cost maybe, you know, under two dollars a pound and that’s still a really
good price for a really amazing spirulina because check this out, growing your own spirulina,
you will save money. You’re gonna invest once with this kit and you can grow spirulina
literally forever. You just have to keep buying the nutrients to put in there and if you go
and buy spirulina, you know, at the health food store like one bottle like this could
cost like fifty bucks for a high quality spirulina such as this one by HealthForce superfoods
and if you’re not gonna grow your own I do recommend you actually get the HealthForce
superfoods TruGanic spirulina some of the best stuff out there. So yeah, you will save
money and you’ll have higher quality than even bottled products can’t provide. Of
course you can dry it yourself if you want. Now the last thing I’d like to say is you
might be thinking ‘John it’s great you guys showed us how to grow it and talked about
how you’re gonna save money and you can continue just growing it once you have the
kit once but how does it taste man? Does it taste like you’re eating rotten fish? Does
it taste like, eating dirt? What does it taste like?’ So I’ve tasted spirulina before
many years ago and I actually have a video on that and I’ll post the link down bellow
when I tasted fresh spirulina that was being brewed in a tank set up like this, cause I’ve
learned about this in many years. Finally, I’m glad I’ve gotten an easy to use kit
that I can explain to you guys cause you know a lot of places just, actually you could buy
the culture and you have to figure out and do DIY and make the nutrients mixture yourself,
that’s a pain in the ass, and I’ve always wanted to show you guys the really easy kit
that everybody can use and set up. It grows successfully the spirulina like I did today
and this is super simple you don’t even think, or have to think too much. Instead
just follow the easy directions that I’ve showed you guys in this episode. So what it
tastes like, I mean, it totally tastes neutral like if you don’t like the taste of the
kale you’re probably gonna love the taste of spirulina. It kind of has like a fluffy
texture and it really doesn’t taste like anything like I had it flavoured with some
mint essential oil and it tasted like mint but basically the flavour of the spirulina
you’re growing is going to take on any kind of flavour you put in there. So if you put

  2. This is such an awesome idea ! Btw if you are ever in a pinch and don't have the iron chelate drinking rust, although it seems disgusting, will not give you tetanus. Just thought I'd share that. Possibly the microbes in the solution will eat the rusted iron? No idea but if so that may also take a while haha. Pretty sure that could turn it into useable nutrients for you though

  3. My Great Grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee Indian and she would take peanut butter out to the fence and scrape the rust on the Barbed wire fence and ate it with the peanut butter. She lived to be 93 and was working her garden the day before she died. js

  7. Rudeness makes comments unreadable (unpalatable). That being said I did learn a bit from the comments. But still, the harassment is unnecessary. You can't share an idea if you use them like a weapon.

    I already have my mind up that I want to study algea, plankton, and aquaponics. I find the more information I can get about a product before I buy it, the happier I will be with it. One small detail can ruin it for me. For example: I'll be looking for ways to get around continuously having to burn 180w an hour to run a small air pump. That's adds up to a lot of Fossil Fuel energy, I would need more battery power to have it run on my solar system. Keep on keeping on, John. I think your videos are good just the way they are. I know for me, all this negativity would make me hesitant to continue reading YouTube notifications, just so I could have some peace.

  26. Civilization is doomed to collapse due to catastrophic climate change. Growing Spirulina in the privacy and security of your own home is the only way you can safely keep you and your loved ones from starving in an urban situation.

  27. I want to make a mini ecosystem where I breed brine shrimp, rotifers, daphnia, etc in a tank with algae like nannochloropsis and chlorella. The algae serve as food for the critters and the waste of the critters serves as food for the algae. I'd breed the critters to feed my fish. Do you guys think this will work?

  28. People do actually raise fish for food in their backyards, but NOT in such a tiny tank. That's for keeping fish as pets. There are plenty of aquaponic videos. REAL food independence requires a lot of hard work and is a full-time job, whether or not you raise fish or livestock. Growing what you can in your spare time to supplement your food supply and save money is definitely a good idea, but you will still need to buy food.

  29. These systems are so overpriced. Make your own media and make your own synthetic nutrients for a fraction of the price that they're charging you. At this price it's simply not economical to produce your own. But if you're making your own medium and using readily available nutrients or mix your own – the system is economical and logical. I highly doubt you still have a live culture going. They want you to replace the medium every three months and at that price are you really better off? If you want to make this algae culture practical I recommend the following: 1. Formulate your own Alkali Medium and nutrient regimen. 2. Control the temperatures tightly with an aquarium heater 3. Invest in an EC meter and monitor the EC of solution and keep it in optimum levels 4. Invest in a pH meter (more accurate than strips or indicating solutions) 5. Invest in some decent testing equipment that can measure the carbonate hardness, NPK, Ammonia levels, Iron levels, and the salinity of your medium. A complete soil science testing kit should work well for this purpose ($300 – up to $2,000+) All of these important parameters need to be carefully monitored and adjusted to keep your culture healthy and going. 6. Invest in producing multiple cultures to anticipate any crashes that might happen – like an algae insurgence policy. 7. Invest in a good $300 (minimum) student level microscope (slides, filters, etc) 8. Get acquainted with identifying algae, fungi, bacteria and protozoa. 9. Realize that all of these things are above the typical hobbyist gardener level! This is very important!

    You can't just buy a generic algae kit like this one and expect to get an "endless regenerative supply" without some serious effort put into making that a reality. You have to be a "science enthusiast" to actually make this "WORK" – like you're anticipating here. That might require some rigorous academic discipline and a minimum of several hundred (and potentially thousands) of dollars in investment depending primarily on the individual learning curve. Sorry to crush your expectations here people – but better now than after experiencing the expense of failure and giving up.

    I'm not saying you're stupid at all – it's just that these kinds of kits are designed to make money not designed to make you an endless supply of super food !!! AT BEST they are designed to get you 'intellectually interested' and then profit off of you. Keep this in mind before rushing out to purchase one of these kits. They want to profit off your repeated failures – they are anticipating them greatly! If you don't have a problem spending the money on a "learning experience" – then go for it! Just don't expect much and don't buy more than one regardless of how much money you have. Invest in your education more before giving them any more of your hard earned money!!! If you still want to cultivate arthrospira and you have all the minimum tools, the medium and the proper 'know how' – then it can be done economically and in a sustainable fashion. (Not spending money on overpriced medium is the way to go if you plan on long-term cultivation.) The important take away from all of this is simply: ANTICIPATE YOUR OWN FAILURE . If you do this with precision & excellence – then no such failures are likely to occur in the first place… but this is very rare even for science enthusiasts like myself 🙂 Don't get discouraged if you fail; use it as motivation to obtain a better result and you can't really "fail" as long as you keep that mentality going …although you might run out of money!!! (something to consider among the other variables here) lol John really doesn't know the first thing about formulating synthetic nutrients, the synthetic chelators he's using here in this video, the exchange reactions and resulting precipitates that can ruin nutrient availability… the proper Calcium:Magnesium ratios – the proper ammoniacal nitrogen to nitrate ratio … etc etc. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way at all – John is a great farmer and he grows some bad ass organic produce! (that's why I'm subbed to this channel after all) If he were farming synthetic hydroponic plants at a master grower level then I would hold it against him… but he doesn't claim to be a "hydroponics specialist" – so I don't expect him to know all of these things down to an exact science… but… nothing less than an "exact science" is acceptable when culturing arthrospira for the long term, (like he clearly intended on doing here).

    This isn't organic gardening… and it's not "super easy" like people assume it is. (maybe if you're rich and don't mind buying overpriced baking soda every few months) Yes people culture arthrospira in 3rd world countries – that's true – but they also have trained technicians to carefully manage their large production. Something to consider. It might be better for some of you to just stick with growing microgreens 🙂 Trust me on this one!!! I have all the equipment and materials (90% of it anyway) and I'm still not going to purchase a culture sample just yet. I know better. Well, if you made it this far I congratulate you! You might just have what it takes to master the art of culturing "synthetic pond scum". Hopefully you can avoid making some costly mistakes. Don't be afraid to ask questions – I'm like a walking encyclopedia at your service. You'd be fool not to ask and I wouldn't mind sharing the information freely with you anyway. That's why I'm here 🙂

  36. GMO is no different nutritionally than non GMO. You are delusional if you disagree. That said, I grow everything organically simply because its cheaper. My chickens eat bugs and weeds because bugs and weeds are FREE. My fish eat algae because algae is FREE.

  44. Hey John, I was suggested to mix Chlorella with Coconut water, and, drink it !!!!!! For HUGE, "crazy" total health benefit. I'm going to try growing Chlorella at home, now !!!! I will just tie the system in with my hydroponic system ????? And Just use a Rubbermade container. Essentially similar to a second reservoir, except, we want a long, shallow, one???? (more surface area?)
